Advance Medical Directive Act- How is this different from euthanasia? What concerns or considerations should be further refined so that this is not ab
An Advance Medical Directive (‘AMD’) is a document you sign to instruct the doctor treating you (where you are terminally ill and unconscious or incapable of making a rational decision) that you do not want any artificial means of prolonging your life, such as the use of life-sustaining equipment (eg artificial respirator), where there is clearly no hope of finding a cure on either a temporary or permanent basis.
Euthanasia refers to the practice of ending a life in a painless manner. Many different forms of euthanasia can be distinguished, including animal euthanasia and human euthanasia, and within the latter, voluntary and involuntary euthanasia. Voluntary euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide have been the focus of great controversy in recent years.
The difference is that AMD is only used for teminally ill patients whereas euthanasia can be used for any patient( be it terminally ill or not).
Personally, I feel that euthanasia should not be used, and that only AMD be allowed to be used. We should not allow those people, who have a chance to continue living, to end their life simply by using euthanasia. We should only use such methods when the patient is terminally ill, and has no other route but death. However, when the patient still has the chance to live, we must seize suc an opportunity. One's life is definitely the most precious thing to himself/herself, and there should be no reason to end it so easily and simply. Patients must first undertsand the importance of one's own life, and that everyone on earth has only one life; once it's ended, it's ended.
